5 Stars Outstanding
Let me begin by saying that this is my first experience with HDTV. The TV this replaces is an old tube TV that measured, I think 25 inches. So this is such a huge upgrade and I have little to compare it against. First off, I commend Amazon and their arrangement with Pilot. This company contacted me quickly and wanted to deliver in one day. Unfortunately, we were having company, so I arranged to have it delivered the day after the estimated delivery date. No problem. Box in great shape, not a nick.
I immediately began to set up the TV and truly, it was a snap. The connections are logical and well laid out. There are numerous rear connections, and a full set of connections on the side for devices you don’t always have connected. I can’t imagine needing more connections than are available here.
The set is very well thought out, with a great solid swiveling base (and VESA compatible rear mount area), cord keeper in the rear of the set, a good solid remote (it is lit, well laid out, with largish solid buttons). The viewing angle seems quite good to me, and I realize that this has been a problem with LCD sets in the past. The set is also already in the Logitech Harmony remote database. Excellent!
I have used the set with a variety of input: HD cable stations (great); regular cable stations (okay); regular DVD (great); and laptop (great). I am stunned at the picture quality. Great detail rendered, beautiful color, and a variety of screen modes (16:9: 4-3, screen fit, etc) so you can scroll through them to see which is best. I keep calling my wife: “Hey come and see this, you’ll not believe it.” It is a huge – gigantic – qualitative leap forward from what I had previously. I knew that this would be the case, but did not expect to be so floored by it. This model’s screen is not super glossy like some sets so it does not reflect room light sources as much. I really like that kind of finish over the glossy screen types.
I find the menu system to be completely intuitive. In fact for each menu choice, there is text on the bottom of the screen that explains what you are changing. Very helpful. There are also basic controls on the front of the set, but I find them next to impossible to see and use. But they are there (It took me a week or so to find them, REALLY!!!). The manual itself is pretty helpful, though there are some functions that are rather cryptically described (e.g. picture in picture) The set is also very attractive. The touch of red is very subtle. Way more so than images at Amazon or the Samsung site would lead you to believe.
5 Stars Awesome TV
I got this TV to replace my Samsung DLP 50″ tv. The tv’s picture is just awesome, you can tell a huge difference in the contrast ratio from my 4 year old Samsung DLP. Infolink is cool, but not sure its very useful. CEVA Delivery was awesome, i had to take the day off on wednesday the 1st, ordered the prior sunday morning, saw tracking had the tv in my city, but wasnt scheduled until the 7th of July. Called CEVA and they arranged to have it delivered on the 1st. I would recommend this tv, or any tv purchase on amazon, had an awesome experience, and would buy a large ticket item again with confidence.
1 Star Will not power on!
Like two others on here, I also have the power problem. It will not power on. I’ve tried multiple outlets in my house. I get no LED indicator that it’s in standby mode.
I did not buy from Amazon so I’ll be calling Samsung direct to deal with this.
3 Stars Great Picture but Slow Electronics
The picture is beautiful — 5 stars.
The physical unit is attractive; it looks good in the living room — 5 stars.
The remote is average — quite complicated as is normal these days and the layout of the buttons is merely usable enough — 3 stars.
The instructions and set-up are overly complicated. The single most frustrating aspect of home theater is the large number of possible equipment combinations and how they should be connected and configured to get the best possible picture for a given programming selection. There should be pictures and diagrams for every possible combination of equipment and this should be the largest section of the manual. The on-screen set-up menus need to be logically accessible and offer positive feedback to user inputs. The quality of the documentation was average for the industry, which is to say it was pretty miserable. The wording, logic, accessibility and feedback of the on-screen set-up controls was also average for the industry and likewise miserable. This is more of a criticism of the industry as a whole, but it gets — 3 stars.
The response to buttons on the remote control is extremely slow. This is a usability nightmare. It leaves the user wondering if they pressed hard enough? Do they need to press again? Is the remote aimed correctly? Did they press the correct button? and so on. This is an on-going issue that persists for the life of the television. Because this has such a large and ongoing impact on the user experience I give this — 1 star.
Great picture and appearance.
Average remote, set-up and instruction.
Bad usability because of slow electronics.
5 Stars Great for bright room.
This TV is great for our bright living room, several large windows and a skylight. I was worried about the glare when I viewed the B650 at BB because of the mirror-like reflection of the screen. With the matted screen, the B630 does not have this problem and looks great even in the bright afternoon light. I also really like the ability to play movies using the USB port, very nice TV!
