Rardin fuses spy girl with vampire slayer in this entertaining but derivative debut. Jasmine Jaz Parks, a martial artist turned vampire-hunting government agent, is assigned to protect top-notch operative Vayl, a 300-year-old vampire on the side of the good guys. As Vayl helps Jaz to hone her supernatural abilities and she tries to keep from falling for his Romanian charm, they track down a dirty senator in cahoots with Mohammed Khad Abn-Assan, a terrorist who’s making plans for a Red Plague spread through vampire-to-human contact. Rardin delivers all the paranormal touches that fans of Hamilton, Harris and Whedon enjoy, and Jaz’s jittery narration amuses, but the fang-filled plot, replete with action licks and paranormal theatrics, will have trouble standing out in this overcrowded field. 5 Stars LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately, Sony has stopped making this product. The TV function on my first one wouldn’t transfer from the CD to TV (locked up and was apparently not repairable???), and I finally found another one on the internet as is the TV that I use most. The radio and CD player still play fine on the first unit. This under-counter TV has an EXCELLENT picture. It is in my kitchen, and I use it daily. No other under-counter unit had good reviews when I bought the first or second Sony. This product needs to be put back on the production line!!!
4 Stars Overall very happy with this product
Bought this for space and for listening to music and the news while cooking. Am VERY happy that I did. Space is awesome; it fits my needs for CD/FM/and TV. (If I wanted to watch a big screen, I’d go to the family room anyway). Easy installation in the corner cabinet, no accessory needed. The reason for the 4 stars is that one of the stations does not have sound (haven’t figured out what that problem is) and also the AM reception is very poor. Does anyone have any suggestions for this? Finally, wanted to point out that you may be able to find this product for half the cost –as I did at a local TV dealer.
3 Stars Too deep for cabinet
I’d had a GE unit that fit well but worked only O.K. when it stopped working I purchased this w/o checking depth. Jiggering it around and drilling through the cabinet frame, the unit still protrudes from under the cabinet and I still had to get a right angle converter AND loosen all the mounting screws and gouge the drywall to get it to fit. That’s ridiculous.
1 Star Good…untill it stops working!
Installation was not difficult with the right angle coax connector. We would use this unit for approx. 10 or 15 mins in the morning. We were very pleased with it’s performance untill one day we pressed th ON button and nothing happened. No clock, no radio, no CD player, no TV, no power. We have had this thing for 8 months. $200.00 for 8 months of service. That doesn’t rate very high in my book.

After 30 minutes the TV went black and never recovered. Further the provider Sandadeals did not honor a return as they have a no return policy per Amazon. Makes it tough. Sony will only attempt a repair or give a refurbished unit. The downside when a product fails, its better to buy from Best Stores.

4 Stars Evokes the large spirit of William F. Buckley
I was never a fan of the late William F. Buckley’s politics and I disliked his arrogance and supercilious attitude toward many of his guests on Firing Line. Yet, I could not help but admire his articulateness and his wit. His son Christopher has inherited both that articulateness and wit, but seems a much more likable person than his dad was. He has written a highly readable and thoughtful account of what it was like to be raised in this high energy family with amazing candor and in the kind of beautifully honed sentences you might expect from a Buckley. He spares us little of both his father’s and mother’s shortcomings, but he clearly loves them both and cherishes his memories of them. I miss the large presence of William F. Buckley in the world (as I said, despite his politics) and Chris does a fine job of evoking his presence for us.
5 Stars An absolute delight
Having had the pleasure of musically entertaining the Buckleys and being a guest in their New York apartment, “Losing Mum and Pup” was a great expectation for me, especially having read parts of the book serialized recently in the New York Times. Christopher Buckley has presented a poignant and often wildly funny look back on his parents’ lives. What a duo they were!
The author discloses much, but revealing his own emotions in dealing with his parents’ decline makes this book shine. Anecdotes dot the landscape in the memoir and his closeness (yet sometimes distance!) with Mum and Pup helps the reader understand the younger Buckley’s particular intimacy with them toward their end. The narrative of “Losing Mum and Pup” never lets down and his witty way with words keeps us with a smile throughout…even at the hardest times for him.
There is an added plus for perhaps a small slice of the reading public. If you are in your mid-fifties, as I am, and about to lose both parents, his advice is taken to heart, especially prenegotiating the funeral expenses! Christopher….thanks for that tidbit…and thanks for the wonderful book.
3 Stars A MIXED BAG
Christopher was working through his emotionally charged relationship with Bill and Pat. Understandable.
Mostly, this makes for stimulating reading. But, there is a point where some semblance of good taste should create boundaries. Some respect is due. Both to the parents and to the sensibilities of the reader.
I refer, mainly, to the segment in which Chris finds it necessary to describe in great detail the quality of his dying father’s urine. The pages devoted to Bill’s coping with BPH are, also, unnecessary and demeaning.
My sense is that the son’s hostility to his dad goes far beyond what he is willing to admit.
There must be a line between satire and mean spirits; Christopher Buckley seems oblivious to this line.
I held, and continue to hold, Bill Buckley in high esteem. In spite of his son’s lack of sensitivity.
From what I have read, most recently, Christopher’s moral compass needs some consideration and readjustment.
4 Stars Not What I Feared It Might Be
This book was not not the vicious rant I feared it would be, and shame on me for thinking it could be anything else. It was a warm, loving, compulsively readable account of the author’s experiences tending to his well-known parents during their final days. Despite the grievances any child might have with his parents (and Buckley certainly has a few that some of us will never know), the author treats the subject as fairly as one could expect of anyone in his position. Reading this increased my respect for Christopher Buckley’s skills as a writer; like father, like son, more than a few times I found myself reaching for a dictionary.
5 Stars Brilliant, moving, and even funny
Brilliant, funny, heart-wrenching. My parents were neither quite as odd nor as famous, but otherwise, Christopher Buckley’s experience with their death was remarkably similar emotionally to mine. The mix of pain and humor, of finding oneself in ludicrous situations while trying to protect a parent from a painful reality or from their own impulses. I too am an only child who was ‘careless enough’ to lose both parents within a short time (6 weeks in my case).
Buckley’s writing, rhythm, and humor make sparkle what could have been painful tales, the kind you want to nudge anyone nearby and say ‘listen to this.’ Part of sharing the experience with him is that we all know of so many of the people and events involved, so many of the books and quotes, and spiritual challenges. I knew almost nothing about Pat Buckley, but I was able to relate, especially having had a similarly imperious mother (who is gone or I wouldn’t have dared say that in public).
One doesn’t have to have agreed with William F. Buckley, Jr. to appreciate his wry brilliance or discount his flaws. Take it from a female, Jewish, liberal. It probably helps to have heard him speak, have read his words, or watched the amazing Firing Line, but that makes for a fairly large audience who will be able to hear him through his son’s words. A son whose love, admiration, frustration, and humanity are clear in every paragraph.
I have heard some people are upset and claim a negative portrait of Buckley emerges. Have we read the same book? For me, it made him more understandable and true to his very strong principles.
Good book, good job, thank you for writing.

The Secret

Supporters will hail this New Age self-help book on the law of attraction as a groundbreaking and life-changing work, finding validation in its thesis that one’s positive thoughts are powerful magnets that attract wealth, health, happiness… and did we mention wealth? Detractors will be appalled by this as well as when the book argues that fleeting negative thoughts are powerful enough to create terminal illness, poverty and even widespread disasters. The audio version of this controversial book, read by Byrne and contributing authors such as John Gray and Neale Donald Walsch, is uneven at best. The cheesy, obvious sound effects will not do much to add intellectual respectability to a work that has been widely denounced as pseudoscience. Mostly, this audio is hampered by its confusing and disjointed organization—techniques that worked reasonably well in the print version and the movie, such as cutting every few seconds from one enthusiastic expert to another, make for a choppy and somewhat bewildering listening experience. The gentle cadences of Rhonda Byrne’s breathy, Aussie-infused voice are certainly the best part of the audio, but her material is scarce and provides mostly connective tissue between the testimonials.

3 Stars Said Before in Many Ways
The marketing on this book is so blatently not hidden I commend the author. At least the hypocrisy goes only so far. The content has been said in many other books through the century. There is a discrepency in my opinion when they focus on materialism and wealth. There are positives in most all books. The Secret also has some positive aspects, however the fluff and simplicity sugars down the practicality.
Too many hurting souls will bury their heart into this book, only to find that getting through life crisis is not as simple as rubbing the cover of this book as a magic lamp.

Rhonda Byrne had developed a most interesting compilation of ‘creation wisdom’ in her book ‘The Secret.’
All that I can say is I’ve read this book a few times over. With each reading I understand the wisdom more completely.
I highly recommend that you read ‘The Secret’ because it works like magic!

5 Stars Inspiring
This cd set is great if you believe in a higher power. It really reminds you how to think more positive. These cd’s tell you things most people already know but a lot of us never really apply it to our everyday lives. I have the book, cd’s and dvd. I bought it last year and a few things that I have focused on has happened. Read this if you want better health, more money, or just to remind you to be thankful for the little things in life.
