5 Stars very good set
this was on sale at BB. Ordinarily I’m not that crazy about lg. The samsung in the same size had A LOT more reflection. if this is an issue for you, think hard about the LG. This set has an excellent picture, good sound, and it is easy to adjust the picture. No need in my opinion for 1080 in this size (or any other size unless watching a lot of blu-ray.) Big features of this set were light weight (easy to move) and very low reflection from other light sources.

I’d get it again.

5 Stars Great choice for small room
This TV deserves another 5 star rating! It’s perfect for our bedroom. The picture and sound were great on standard settings right out of the box, although it has several alternate pre-sets and infinitely tweakable custom settings. The big menu is very intuitive but it also has a quick menu that pops up in the lower right corner for quick changes to common things. The remote is small and has well spaced, easy to use buttons.

I wanted a solidly built TV with decent sound and my wife wanted no clutter and simple operation. This one is all black, no “bling” but has enough features and connections so we could use it for more than a standalone TV. The “invisible speaker system” is pure genius and gives a surprisingly full sound without needing a speaker system and amp (no clutter). More importantly (to me since I’m a bit hard of hearing), the clear voice and auto sound leveling (quiet parts automatically turned up while commercials don’t come out blaring) both work well. It’s one of those “set and forget” things. Here are more pictures and specs: [...]

A technophile could hash over the finer points and compare this to others in its class, but as far as I’m concerned: it’s a new model, has a clear, bright picture, the faces and landscapes all look realistic, and it has great sound, so how much better can it get? Of course the news and some commercials are still way over the top with color saturation and contrast, but that’s not the TV’s fault.

6ave get’s five stars too. I’d never heard of them until I saw this item, but 2 minutes on their website convinced me they were organized and reputable. It came wrapped in a second box with foam peanuts all around it to prevent shock. The order was placed on Sunday and it arrived Wednesday morning in perfect condition. They are in the same league with NewEgg, B&H Photo and BuyDig. Also UPS called us to make sure someone was home to sign for it.

One last thing… the manual power switch and all the other side controls/connectors are on the right side out of view, and that little bump on the bottom frame (on the right) is a subtle status indicator light that glows red or blue. The main jacks are all on the rear left (as you would face the screen) and it has a built in wire guide that can help keep a few wires neater.

Overall we are both very, very pleased and now we are planning on replacing our big rear projection box with a sleek LCD TV, probably a bigger version of this one.

So get off the Samsung bandwagon and get this one before they sellout. Nothing against Samsung at all, but some marketing genius has stolen the attention from other well engineered new TVs available on Amazon.

5 Stars Very Happy Birthday to Me!
I’ve had my new LG for a week and I’m thrilled with it. We bought this T.V. to replace an older 19″ CRT for the den, where my wife and I end up watching T.V. in the evenings because the kids are doing homework or entertaining in the room with the big HDTV. The picture is so crisp, and the colors so vibrant, that I find myself looking for excuses to turn it on and watch it. I’m afraid to admit it, but I may actually prefer my new 32″ LG to my 60″ Sony! I liked the swivel base, so I was choosing between this set and a Samsung at the same price point. The pictures were very, very similar in quality, but I chose the LG because it was a newer model than the Samsung, and the Samsung was really at the low end of the Samsung line, while this LG is more in the middle of the LG line. The picture was great out of the box, although the T.V. is packed with features allowing you to tune and tweak the picture settings to your heart’s content. I’m also very happy I didn’t spend more money for a 1080p set. At 32″ the 720p resolution looks awesome, so I can spend that extra $150 on something else. Add to all the above the fact that the set looks fabulous sitting in its cabinet, and you have a great value. Thanks LG!

5 Stars Sony Bravia
We purchased this 19″ Sony Bravia Television to replace an old analog television in the bedroom of our 5th Wheel RV (mounts in a swing out cabinet). The picture and sound are great and passed our expectations but the best part is that the installation was a perfect fit with no pedestals to deal with. All we have to do is un-snap 2 clips and it becomes portable again and we can take it anywhere. We highly recommend it.

4 Stars Great Buy !
Just purchased one of these at Costco for $249.00. Will set up and advise on the quality. This is to be used in a kitchen.

3 Stars Some real answers
I have yet to make my purchase of this product but I intend to make an informed decision. I would be using this TV at university to play my PS3 and X Box 360 pro using HDMI outputs. Also I would probably be bringing it to and from different places for system link games. Which is why the handle seems a good thing for me. All of the reviews for this product do not tackle the HD capabilities of this device… How does a Blu Ray, not upscaled DVD look, or how about gaming, can anyone help?

5 Stars Typical Sony Quality & Great Reception
This is the second 19-inch LCD HDTV that I have bought, and the first Sony for this size.

I bought this white Sony to place in my kitchen where I have had a black Sharp 19-inch LCD HDTV (which I moved to a bedroom). Well first I found that the color is bright and the blacks are solid giving it an excellent picture. This white Sony is also a very attractive unit and perfect to have in a nice kitchen. It is also solid and easy to adjust how straight it stands up.

Plus, using the exact same rabbit ears from the Sharp HDTV it’s replacing in my kitchen, for over the air digital channels, the Sony has much better reception. I’m able to pickup more digital channels then I could with the Sharp.

I would certainly buy this Sony HDTV again.

3 Stars Just OK
This Bravia replaced a Sharp Aquos counter top model which developed a shadow on the screen after about two years of use. It is larger (about 4″) picture wise than the Sharp and was the largest set I could find that would stand on the counter and fit under an overhead cabinet. It runs off a Direct TV, non-HDTV signal.

Factory preset picture settings were just awful with a very dark picture and odd glossy flesh tones. I tried to adjust the picture a number of times but finally realized I was trying to get the colors and resolution I was used to on the Sharp, which the Bravia apparently won’t do. If my set had true factory picture presets I can guarantee anyone else buying this set will be spending a lot of time trying to adjust the picture.

In addition, unless you are viewing the set from directly in front and at set level the picture washes out excessively which is annoying since a kitchen set is usually viewed from a number of angles.

I would definitely recommend viewing and comparing this set in a store before purchasing. I will probably be looking for a replacement set and relegate this one to a guest bedroom.

5 Stars Lg Plasma 60 inch
This TV has been a great addition to our famlies entertainment center. I have waited for a while to purchase my first plasma/ flat screen tv and it was worth the wait. the picture is clear, clean and crisp, as well as the many different functions and plug in ports. I am looking forward to many years of great tv viewing.

5 Stars Fantastic
We had been looking at many plasma and lcd flat screens and even tossed around a large screen dlp. We have a 52 inch lcd Toshiba that is in a family room and wanted a larger screen in what we call our gathering room off of the kitchen. After going around to many electronic stores we went with the LG60PG60.Being able to view the many flat screens together it was obvious. For the money and picture quality it was LG.

We also went with a Samsung surround sound system ,Sony Blue Ray and a APC H15 line conditioner and surge protector. And you have to hang it on the wall, looks fantastic !

4 Stars Very Nice
The Picture is a high quality Hi Def. The frame less edge is neat.

The speakers shoudls have a greater sound. All around a great TV for the price.

1 Star Very bad service from LG
I recieved the 60 inch plasma TV and it worked for 3 days. Then a large black rectangle appeared in the top of the display. I worked with LG customer service back and forth for 7 weeks. 2 Technicians have been out to try to replace the TV, but to no avail. I have spoken on the phone with them many times and they create a new story every time. The TV remains broken.

5 Stars Awesome!!
Great TV…..everything as expected an then some. Set up was a breeze and it looks beautiful in the room. Picture quality is outstanding. Would recommend in a heart beat!!

1 Star The Sony V5100 Series is a Heartbreaker!
I bought the 40V5100 on April 2nd at Best Buy to replace my broken 42 inch Toshiba HD projection TV. The main reason I chose a Sony was for its non-glare screen. After a few days of calibrating the unit, the picture was very good and I must say that during the day, my projection TV would be washed out by the sunlight, but the Sony looked fabulous.

So I was a happy camper until I first noticed the dimming problem during movie credits. Well, I could live with that until I couldn’t see a thing when watching the Jurassic Park: Lost World scene when the T-Rex pushes the bus over the cliff. I started freaking out and began searching for dark movie scenes elsewhere. Sure enough, night scenes from Harry Potter, X-Files, CSI, or any sci-fi movie became black.

I switched the TV set-up mode from Home Environment to Retail thinking that would solve my problem. No such luck and I noticed that in the Retail Mode the TV settings would always return to “Vivid Max-Set” no matter what changes were made. I searched the internet and saw numerous complaints about this same issue.

Sony broke my heart, but the good news is that Best Buy is exchanging the set under its 30-day return policy and replacing it with the brand new Samsung LN40B630. It’s the non-glare screen version of the popular B650 model. I’m getting it in a few days and I will comment on that model after I’ve had it for a while.

4 Stars Overall a great TV
Update: You can now download the firmware update for this TV at the link below. It will fix the auto-dimming problem. I would now give it 5 stars: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=KDL40V5100&upd_id=4573&os_id=25

——————-

I have owned this TV for about two weeks now and think it is great. The picture is very sharp. The colors are great. The blacks and whites look fabulous. The stand it comes with is very sturdy and there are more than enough inputs for my needs. The TV itself also looks very elegant.

I was going to buy this 2009 TV or the 2008 Sony KDL-40Z4100 (a higher end model from the previous year), whichever came down in price first. The two TVs are very comparable in features. The main difference for me was price but also important were the contrast ratios. This TV has a contrast ratio of 50:000 to 1 while the KDL-40Z4100 has a contrast ratio of 30:000 to 1. As a further comparison, the 2008 version of this TV, the KDL-40V4100, has a 25:000 to 1 contrast ratio. That big jump in contrast ratio pushed me towards this TV over last year’s Z series.

I have read the reviews describing the auto-dimming but honestly I don’t think it is that big of a deal. We watch mostly TV (Lost, 24, The Office, sports, etc.) as opposed to movies and after two weeks of use, today was the very first day I noticed the auto-dimming. It happened for about 2 seconds and was a strange dimming. My wife still has not noticed it even though we have both been on the lookout for it to see how bad it is.

While I agree that I cannot see how this is a feature Sony would want to include without being able to turn off, to me, it was pretty minor and I would still happily buy the same TV again. I suppose that there are shows or movies where this happens more frequently but after two weeks, I still don’t see it often. I took off a half star for this.

The other half star taken off comes from what seems like a long time for the TV to start. Once you turn it on it seems like it takes around 20 seconds to get started and display a picture. It isn’t a huge deal and once the TV is on it doesn’t affect anything. However, compared to my old CRT which turned on in a couple of seconds it seems long.

My hope is that Sony comes out with some sort of firmware update that allows you to turn this auto-dimming “feature” off as many customers are unhappy with it. That is pure speculation though as I haven’t heard any hints of this happening.

1 Star A Very Bad TV from Sony
Beware Brothers and Sisters of this TV.

Just, like the previous poster, my TWO Sony TVs had the darkening problem. I exchanged the first. I’d be watching Charlie Rose and the screen would go Dark for three seconds then return to normal. Happens about 15 times an hour.

I contacted Sony. Incredibly Sony said the darkening was normal. The representative then let on that Sony was aware of this “non-problem” and that there was no fix available. Oh, Sony said to fix the problem up grade to an XBR model.

I always thought Sony was a reputable Company. Here they are, knowingly, selling bad TVs. Kinda makes one think, what else are they doing?

I’m going to return the TV and tell the sales people about this major problem.

Disappointed in Connecticut

5 Stars Excellent TV
Update May 3, 2009:

My original review of the TV was negative due to a problem of dimming during dark scenes. But few days ago Sony released a software patch to correct the problem and it worked for me. Now, the auto dimming can be turned off by setting the “Adv. Contrast Enhancer” to Off. Also, even when it’s turned On, it doesn’t behave like it did pre- patch, it now dims gradually rather than abruptly and it doesn’t dim as much as it did before. Thank you very much Sony, I’m updating my rating to 5-star.

I’m very happy with the TV now that the auto dim is fixed. If you own the TV and having problems with the dimming, go to the support section of Sony’s site to download the patch and the instructions on how to apply it. You will need a USB thumb drive formatted in FAT32, but if you don’t have it, Sony will mail you one if you call their customer support.

Original review:

Date: April 8, 2009

Rating: 2 stars

When I purchased this TV few days ago, there were no reviews here since it’s just been recently released into the market. I, however, looked at the reviews of the previous model (KDL-40V4100) and didn’t find any serious complaints so I went ahead and purchased this TV. I regret my purchase and will explain why.

This is my third LCD TV — the others are early generations LCDs from Sharp and Sony and they are still working great, but they are no match for the picture quality of this new Sony. There are a lot of good things about this TV and I would have given it 5 stars if not for one serious flaw.

The TV dims during dark scenes. And sadly it doesn’t do it gradually, it happens abruptly 6 seconds after the start of a dark scene and it returns to normal lighting abruptly about 0.35 seconds after end of a dark scene. It seems to happen regardless of the source of input (I tested it with composite, and HDMI) and it happens on broadcast channels and cable and regardless of the “picture mode” and other video settings. There is no way to disable it. If you’re watching a movie with lots of dark scenes, it’s going to be a very annoying experience.

Take this example, while watching a documentary on first gulf war, there was a lot of night vision camera scenes and the TV keeps dimming during the lengthy dark scenes and when it does that, you can barely make out any details even with Gamma set at max. The dimmer kicking in and out is annoying by itself, much less the picture quality when it dims.

I contacted Sony support and they seemed clueless and recommended I initiate a repair request. I did an internet search only to discover many Bravia models suffer this problem. I initially thought I had a defective unit, but now I think it was intentionally designed like this.

5 Stars I recommend getting this on audio cd!!!
I listened to this on audio cd, and I think it really helped deliver the message and allow space to practice some of the exercises and really get the most out of it. You have got to give this book a chance, if you don’t get it or like it after the first chapter, don’t continue!! You’ll know right away if this is something you will learn from, don’t let other people tell you what to think about it, just get it and try it for yourself.

1 Star Huh? Totally useless waste of money
This was a total waste of time and money. I never did figure out what he was attempting to say beyond his own egocentric rambling. Junk!!!

1 Star Don’t do it!
Over-hyped, thickly written, some pearls of wisdom but they are well hidden. Tolle could cut content by 50% and made better impact. Not all “Oprah’s Book Club” books are worth it…and this definitely falls into that category.

5 Stars Love this book
This book should be required reading for all of humanity. I’ve heard/read the concepts before, but not as accessible as this. For someone who cannot connect with religion because of the “rules” that separate those in from those out, this is the connection to God/Universe/everything-nothing I’m looking for.

5 Stars Life Changing!
This is by far the best book I’ve ever read. The information he shares is easy to apply and changed my life. I’ve been able to recognize egoic situations and respond more appropriately, to improve the relationships in my life and to be more at peace. A must read!
